Internal Site Search Insights:
- Use internal site search to track search terms, measure outcomes and amplify the voice of the customer.
- Select the free or paid ($100/year minimum) version of the Custom Search Engine. The free version includes Google branding and ads from AdSense. The Google logo and ads are optional in the paid version.
- Add the search box code to the <body> element of the search page. Remove the transliteration script to improve site performance.
- Add the search results code to the <body> element of a different page than the search box. Choose to host the results page on your website. This will enable Google Analytics to track site search activity. The overlay and Google hosted options display search results that Google Analytics does not track.
- Edit your Google Analytics Profile Information to Track Site Search and include a Query Parameter, typically the letter q. For example, an internal search query for salmon might look like www.yourdomain.com/?q=salmon.
- To view a refinement, first search for the term HTML. A trackPageview search refinement should appear at the top of the search results. Click on the search refinement to narrow your internal search results.
- To view a search promotion, search for the term trackEvent. A search promotion for the Event Tracking Guide should appear near the top of the internal site search results.
- View a standalone version of a custom search engine. Google Analytics reports any clicks as Source=google and Medium=organic. In addition, the clicked page's URI appears as a Landing Page in the Content Report.
